- !Bodiam - a simple guide to Bodiam Castle, East Sussex.
-
- This is a Genesis application and requires Genesis Plus or
- the Genesis !Browser programme.
-
-
- FRNT, FRNT1 and SOUTH are !PAINT files. The original photographs were
- taken on a field-study visit to the castle, by year 7 pupils from the
- Tideway School, Newhaven, East Sussex.
-
- The photographs were taken using a Canon Ion and transferred to the
- Archimedes using an HCCS digitiser.
-
- It can be quite interesting comparing these files to the model in the

- NOTES on Bodiam Castle :
-
- - the castle was built partly as a comfortable residence and partly as
- a fully functioning castle.
-
- - Sir Edward Dalyngrigge was its builder.
-
- - he started building the castle in 1385.
-
- - he claimed that it would be a protection against French raiders who
- could sail up the River Rother.
-
- - almost as soon as it was built, the castle was 'out of date'.
-
- - it was partly dismantled during the English Civil War.
-
- - the castle was later owned by Lord Curzon, who left it to the
- National Trust when he died in 1925.
-
- - EDWARD DALYNGRIGGE had a moated manor house just to the north
- of Bodiam church. It was disused shortly after the castle was
- built.
-
- - Dalyngrigge was appointed in 1380 to look into the ways that
- Winchelsea could be fortified against the French. Bodiam was
- 14 miles up the River Rother from Rye and slightly further
- from Winchelsea, but it was regarded as part of the port of
- Winchelsea.
-
- - other factors that influenced the building of Bodiam castle ?
- 1381 Peasant's Revolt and the continuing unrest in the south.
